We currently have 25 outage locations and 3,796 member-owners’ homes and businesses without power. Our crews along with those from Pickwick Electric, Milan, JEA, Forked Deer Electric, Chickasaw Electric and Service Electric have been working since daybreak. Crews from Southwest Tennessee Electric Cooperative and Dyersburg Electric System have also joined us today to help make repairs.
On a call with Gibson EMC management this morning TVA officials said TVA anticipates having power to the Clinton, Kentucky substation on Thursday, December 16. Both TVA’s and Gibson EMC’s repairs must be made to restore power to those served from the Clinton substation. Gibson EMC is diligently working to complete its repairs in that area and in all other areas still without power.
For Gibson EMC and our members, this was an incredibly damaging tornado event. Our thoughts and prayers are with our members who have lost loved ones and property. We are thankful that our employees are safe, but the cooperative has sustained hundreds of broken poles. Our wholesale power supplier, TVA, also suffered extensive damage.
Gibson EMC and TVA understand how important electric service is and we are working to restore power to the affected areas as soon as we can safely do so. Gibson Connect also realizes the importance of internet connectivity and is replacing fiber as poles are replaced to restore internet service quickly as well. Gibson EMC, Gibson Connect and TVA ask for your patience during this difficult process.
We ask everyone to maintain a focus on safety during the recovery process:
- Always treat any downed power line as if it is “live.”
- Move to a safe location and keep others away from the area near the downed line.
- Contact Gibson EMC to report the downed line; and if there is an immediate danger, call 9-1-1 or your local emergency responders.
If using a portable generator:
Always have a licensed electrician install the generator. Never attempt to connect a generator into your electric panel.
Always operate the generator in an open, well-ventilated area.
Never use a generator in a garage or enclosed structure.
Ensure generator power is only used through appropriate extension cords or through a professionally installed generator switch.
We will continue to provide updates as we make progress.
